Weekly Wrap-up ~ the one where I catch up on the past three weeks :)

Um….it’s been three week since I’ve shared about what’s been going on in our homeschool… I can assure you that there has been a lot of good stuff taking place, I just haven’t had time to write about it :)

Let’s see if I can sum up the past three weeks in this one post…

Calendar & Circle Time ~ Ds3 is loving his part in calendar time…He loves being the one to add the number to our calendar pocket chart every day.  And he takes his job as the weather guy very seriously too :).

100_7026 I’m so glad that I was finally able to add Circle Time back into our school day {we’re on our 3rd week}.  I like to use this time to work on memorizing scripture {with the help of our new Seeds CDs}, work with the kiddos on manners/character, read poetry {one poem per week}, read missionary stories/biographies {we’re currently reading Catching Their Talk in a Box}, and learn/practice hymns {three per term}.

Reading ~ I know that I have mentioned this before…but I absolutely LOVE our All About Spelling curriculum!  I know that All About Spelling is a spelling curriculum, but my main reason for choosing to use it with my dd6 {we don’t usually do spelling in first grade around here} is because of its phonics-based approach to spelling.  So, I am essentially using it as a reading program with dd6 and so far I am very pleased with the results.   She is almost finished with Step Six in the Level One book.

Ds8 is still reading through the second McGuffey Reader.  I am intending to start using All About Spelling with him at some point {he was such a good reader that I am wondering if I slacked off on phonics a bit early with him}…but so far we haven’t been able to add it into our day.

Math ~ Both of the older kiddos are plugging away with their CLE Math books…I love the simplicity of this math program :)

Geography ~ So far we’ve studied the continents & oceans and Italy.  We are now working our way through France.

Read Alouds ~ Last week we finished up our first Core 2 Read Aloud ~ Red Sails to Capri.  We are currently reading The Family Under the Bridge (from Sonlight Core K} and then it’s on to listening to Ginger Pye {I checked out an audio book version from the library}.

100_6994In the past three weeks I’ve also taken all three kiddos {and me} to the dentist for cleanings, ds8 has attended two baseball games {one minor-league, one major league}, I attended a very inspiring Beth Moore Conference, we survived a cousins’ campout, and we’re currently dealing with a cold that’s been working its way through our family :(

I love that you are using All About Spelling as a reading program! My oldest taught himself to read, so even though I have one very proficient reader, I have yet to teach anyone to read, and am very curious to see what will work best with my next kiddo.

Except for the cold, it sounds great. We loved Red Sails To Capri and Catching Their Talk In A Box. Of course, I think we've loved almost all of the Sonlight books! Have a great week!
